Cryptocurrency mining | Hydro-Quebec is stolen 2 million

Published

on

Hydro-Quebec has trapped cryptocurrency miners who have been working since last spring without paying their electricity bill, which cost it $ 2 million.

Charges of electricity theft and fraud could be brought for these misdeeds committed at three different addresses, in Beauport and Saint-Damien de Buckland. The decision rests with the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions, to whom the case has been transferred.

This is the second time that Hydro-Québec has put an end to illegal activities related to cryptocurrency mining. Last August, alerted by explosions in its transformers, the state-owned company put an end to illegal cryptocurrency activities in the same area of Beauport. A thousand computers had been seized on this occasion.

This time, it was following a “major investigation” conducted by Hydro-Quebec and the Sûreté du Québec that searches took place on Friday, October 22.

Each year, approximately 400 fraud and theft of electricity are discovered by Hydro-Québec. Cryptocurrency mining is one of the new trends in this type of crime, says the state-owned company.

Hydro-Québec’s intention is to recover the stolen amounts, but also to ensure the security of its network. “The tampered with installations present a high risk of electrocution and fire,” recalls the state-owned company.
