AdminThe release of PSVR 2 is fast approaching. We take stock of all the information known to date on Sony’s next VR headset, specially designed for the PS5.
After a discreet announcement in 2021, Sony took advantage of the year 2022 to reveal more about its next big project in the world of video games: the PSVR 2. It is a key product for the firm, after a first version released in 2016, shunned by players preferring HTC or Oculus models.
While the latter takes a clear lead, especially with its Quest 2, Sony is trying to establish itself in a growing market at the dawn of the metaverse with an updated helmet, specially created for the PS5. We invite you here to compile all the information known to date on the PSVR 2, which was recently unveiled at CES 2022.
At the tech event, Sony unveiled part of the VR headset’s spec sheet and it already looks promising. Here’s everything we know about PSVR 2 and its accompanying controllers:

At the helmet level, Sony promises us a display with a resolution of 2000 x 2040 per eye, which is superior to what its direct competitor offers. With its adaptive refresh rate ranging from 90Hz to 120Hz and its 110° field of view, the PSVR2 could become one of the favorite VR headsets for gamers. Note also that it has a technology ofeye tracking which promises increased display fidelity.
In addition, Sony bards it with a panoply of technologies that will support immersion. We note for example the presence of vibrations and movement sensors on the helmet, as well as several cameras to better situate the player in his environment. Same observation for the controllers which take up the adaptive triggers and the haptic feedback of the Dual Sense, in addition to movement and capacitive sensors.
It was the controllers (PlayStation VR 2 Sense) that were unveiled first. All dressed in white and black, like the PS5, they have a circular shape, similar to an orb. This is specially designed to encompass the user’s hand and allow a better grip. The buttons are all located in the same place, and the triggers are arranged just below.
As for the PSVR 2 helmet, the first images were made official on February 22. Overall, it’s not that far from what you can currently find on the market, and it even looks a lot like the Oculus Quest 2, especially in terms of color. Where Sony differs is at the level of the arch, padded with foam for more comfort, which does not differ much from the first PSVR. Only the colored black screen seems to have been squeezed out.
Without being futuristic, Sony therefore lays the foundations for a helmet with an elegant and functional design, except for one crucial point. The PSVR 2 indeed connects via a USB-C cable to the PS5 and does not have wired-free mode. If this allows a connection without latency and better fidelity, for a VR headset, the experience can be degraded since the cable generally hinders the mobility of the player. It remains to be seen whether this integration will work once the finished product is in hand.
For the moment, no release date has been officially announced by Sony for the PSVR 2. However, the latest rumors claim that the helmet could be released at the end of 2022, with a launch approaching the holidays. However, this point remains to be confirmed by Sony, we will update this file with each new announcement.
Just like the release date, Sony has yet to reveal the price of the PSVR 2. But to better understand this news, we can note that the Oculus Quest 2 from Meta is displayed at a price of €349, while the first PSVR is still priced at a minimum of €299 for a basic pack. The price of the PSVR 2 could therefore probably be between 300€ and 400€, or even more.
The shortage that is hitting the entire technology industry, including video games, has not spared the PS5 for more than a year. However, it is not yet known whether the PSVR 2 will be subject to stock shortages. For the moment, the virtual reality industry does not seem to be concerned, but as the shortage of components extends dangerously, the situation could quickly change.
