Don’t like Sonic Frontiers? It’s that you didn’t understand anything…

… At least that’s what one of the game’s developers thinks, confirming that Sonic Frontiers is doing like a charm.

A few days ago, IGN unveiled for the first time to the world the gameplay of a highly anticipated game. It is Sonic Frontiers, the blue hedgehog-centric open-world title from SEGA. However, the minute fans’ eyes landed on these images, a wave of criticism swept through the networkswhich was not to please the teams of Sonic Team.

The heart of the negative comments rests on the fact that Sonic Frontiers looks nothing more or less than a fan-made video game, in other words, a person who would not have the technique and the means to develop an AAA as it is supposed to be. Of course, several factors are the cause. If the environment of the game is rather pretty and immensely large, everything remains very empty, the action is practically non-existent and we feel an extremely slow pace during these few minutes of gameplay.

A trailer which therefore did not have the expected effect, since instead of creating enthusiasm, fans simply asked for the release of the title to be delayed with the hashtag #DelaySonicFrontiers as there is still work to be done. Many are even surprised to find that the films sonic look better than the game that inspired them. However, it seems that the developers are not ready to compromise.

SEGA won’t listen to fans this time around

In an interview with Video Game ChronicleTakashi Iizuka, the head of the Sonic Team studio, defends tooth and nail his latest production, even if it means devaluing the opinion of fans of the franchise. To negative comments that state that Sonic is lost in wanting to deviate from the original path or that it is not qualitative enough, the developer responds:

It’s not really surprising. We realize that everyone reacts to the videos they’ve seen, and since they don’t understand this new gameplay, they compare it to other games they already know. So we see a lot of people say, ‘Oh, it’s a bit like this, it’s a bit like this, but it’s not like that, or it’s not like this’.”

According to him, these fans therefore do not understand what the game wants to convey and the teams that develop it. He mentions in particular how everyone expects an open world game, even though internally they are christening their gameplay as “open area”, an innovative new system that players have yet to experience. the ability to understand because it cannot be compared to anything known: “and this new game system itself is something that doesn’t really exist in other comparable titles. So hopefully by launch we can really explain what open area play is.

So must time pass for the pill to do the same? According to the developer, yes. For the fans it’s a different story. Despite all this, Sonic Team still intends to release Sonic Frontiers for the end of 2022, and that only a health disaster could cause a possible delay.

A story that will not repeat itself

Except that this is not the first time that Sonic has faced a situation like this. Think back to a few years ago when the first trailer for the game-inspired movie was released internationally. Fans were upset about the appearance of the blue hedgehog, which was far too humanized and objectively quite ugly. If SEGA didn’t have much to do with the creative process (although they surely had to validate the process), it was a blow for the franchise… which caught up with it brilliantly.

Only a few days after this failure, the producers decided to listen to the fans and adapt to their requests. History proves to us that they did well since, what promised to be a failure was finally a worldwide success, just like the second opus recently released. By completely erasing the opinion of thousands of players, SEGA may be shooting itself in the foot., even as these fans say they’re ready to expect more for a game that truly honors their favorite hero. What more could they want from their faithful community?
