Eight French people registered for the draft

The NBA unveiled this Wednesday the list of players registered for the next draft, and there are no less than eight French people.

Last year, four French people signed up for the NBA draft, and only one was chosen by a franchise, Juhann Begarin, selected by Boston in 45th position before being sent to Paris to perfect his skills. Joël Ayayi, Olivier Sarr and Yves Pons had remained on the floor at first, before being recruited by franchises (respectively Washington, Oklahoma City and Memphis). This year, and while waiting for Victor Wembanyama expected very very high in 2023, there are eight French people to have registered for the draft, according to the unveiled list published by the NBA on Wednesday. A draft that will take place on June 23, and players have until June 13 to withdraw if they wish. And unlike last year (apart from Begarin), these are not players who play in the American university championship (NCAA) but in Europe and Oceania.

Kamagate like Begarin?

Half of these eight players evolve in Betclic Elite. Starting with the pivot of Paris and teammate of Begarin Ishmael Kamagate (21), who is running this season at 11.8 points and 6.3 rebounds in 27 minutes in the French championship, in a team that plays maintenance. Born three days after him, the leader of Bourg-en-Bresse Hugo Benitez also registered, he who signs a season with 6.1 points, 2.8 assists and 1.9 rebounds in 19 minutes with the JL, currently in the middle of the standings. At 19, the leader of ASVEL Matthew Strazel will also try his luck. His stats are equivalent to those of Benitez, with 5.8 points, 2.5 assists and 1.2 rebounds in 19 minutes, in a co-leading Betclic Elite team. Finally, the least known of them is the back of the Monaco hopeful team Nicolas Vanel (19), who averages 12.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 28 minutes in U21.

Besson, Dieng and Digbeu in the footsteps of LaMelo Ball?

Another player plays in Europe and it is the back of Mega Basket (in Serbia) Malcolm Cazalon, passed by ASVEL and Bourg and son of former pro basketball player Laurent, and which runs at 9.5 points, 2.2 assists and 1.9 rebounds in 22.5 minutes on average in the Adriatic League. Finally, the last three players play in the NBL, the championship of Australia and New Zealand, where LaMelo Ball had notably played before his draft. To start with Hugo Besson, who celebrated his 21st birthday on Tuesday and who plays point guard (or back) for the New Zealand Breakers, after playing in Antibes, Chalon and St-Quentin. He has averaged 13.9 points and 2.3 assists in 28 minutes this season. His teammate Ousmane Dieng, leader of almost 19 years, also presents himself, after a season with 8.9 points and 3.1 rebounds in 20 minutes. Finally, the last Frenchman registered in the draft is called Tom Digbeu (20), the son of former international Alain, who plays winger for the Brisbane Bullets, averaging 4.6 points and 1.5 rebounds this season in 12 minutes. Of these eight players, how many will be selected? Answer on June 23.
