(Washington) L’armée américaine a abattu samedi, sur ordre du président Joe Biden, le ballon chinois qui survolait depuis plusieurs jours les États-Unis, provoquant de vives tensions entre Washington et Pékin.
L’opération menée par un avion de chasse a eu lieu « au-dessus de l’eau au large de la côte de Caroline du Sud, dans l’espace aérien américain », a déclaré dans un communiqué le secrétaire à la Défense américain, Lloyd Austin.
Il a souligné qu’elle avait été menée en réponse à une « violation inacceptable » de la « souveraineté » américaine. Le Pentagone assure qu’il s’agissait d’un ballon-espion.
M. Biden a félicité les pilotes ayant mené « avec succès » cette opération délicate. Il a indiqué avoir donné l’ordre dès mercredi d’abattre « dès que possible » le ballon, mais que le Pentagone souhaitait attendre « le lieu le plus sûr pour le faire » afin d’éviter tout dégât au sol lors de la retombée d’éventuels débris.
Sur des vidéos retransmises par les chaînes de télévision samedi, le ballon semblait tomber à la verticale après un impact.
Peu avant, le trafic aérien avait été suspendu dans trois aéroports du sud-est des États-Unis par mesure « de sécurité nationale », avait annoncé le régulateur de l’aviation civile américaine (FAA). Il s’agissait d’un aéroport en Caroline du Nord et de deux en Caroline du Sud.
« Après une analyse minutieuse, les commandants militaires américains ont déterminé qu’abattre le ballon alors qu’il était au-dessus du sol posait un risque injustifié pour les personnes […]given the size and altitude of the balloon and its surveillance cargo,” the Secretary of Defense said.

On Friday, the Pentagon said a second Chinese balloon had been spotted over Latin America.
