how to get a refund after a purchase?

Learn about the steps and requirements for getting a refund for a PlayStation Store game or app purchase.

Have you ever bought a game from PlayStation Store and instantly regretted it? Or even two days later, when you saw that the same game was on sale at a retailer? If this is your case, we invite you to find out here what to do to obtain a refund from Sony in the event of a purchase error on the PlayStation Store.

First of all know one thing, no refund request is possible via the shop interface on PS4 or PS5. To do this, you will have to go through a smartphone or a computer, so stop looking for the corresponding option on your console, it does not exist.

To request a refund, you will have to go to this page which contains the dedicated form. However, before you go there, be aware that there is a crucial condition for obtaining your refund. You can no longer request it if you have downloaded the product on your console, even if you have not yet played it. We insist on this point because it is prohibitive. A downloaded game can no longer be refunded, in any case.

The first thing to do, to avoid any inconvenience, is already to deactivate the automatic download option in the settings. The second is to ensure that the affected product has not yet been downloaded. To do this, go to the library. If you don’t see it, that’s all good, you can then request your refund via the form mentioned above.

Refund terms and conditions

For the rest, you have been warned. Please be aware that you have a cooling off period when shopping on PlayStation Store. This is equal to a period of 14 days from the date of purchase, for a game already available for purchase, and this as long as you have not downloaded it. But there are many other situations in which this delay may vary. Here are a few :

  • If you purchased a pre-order product more than 14 days before its release, you have until that time to retract and request a refund.
  • For a pre-order within 14 days before the game’s release date, you still have a 14-day period. Beware here of automatic downloading which could end this period prematurely.

Note that all these conditions and procedures are valid for DLCs or films, in addition to games and applications.
