EA formalizes the next name of its current FIFA franchise, and FIFA expresses its desire to explore other video game horizons.

Rumors had been circulating about FIFA games for many months, and EA itself had teased a possible name change soon. It’s now official, the studio drops the name FIFA, and today presents the future of its franchise, dubbed EA FC Sports. In a communicatedEA explains that this name change will be effective from 2023, which leaves this year for fans to say goodbye to the name they have known for the past decades. The firm states:

After nearly 30 years of creating genre-defining interactive football experiences, we will soon be entering an exciting new era. Next year, EA SPORTS FC will become the future of EA SPORTS football. Alongside our more than 300 licensing partners in the sport, we stand ready to take global football experiences to new heights, on behalf of all football fans everywhere..”

A major change for EA which must turn a page on which the company has been writing for 30 years. However, she wants to be reassuring and declares that nothing will change in terms of content. She even states that “everything you love about our games will be part of EA SPORTS FC – the same experiences, modes, leagues, tournaments, clubs and athletes will be there. Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Pro Clubs and VOLTA Football will all be there. Our unique licensing portfolio of over 19,000 players, over 700 teams, over 100 stadiums and 30 leagues […] will always be there. This includes exclusive partnerships with the Premier League, LaLiga, Bundesliga, Serie A, MLS, and more to come..”

FIFA also turns the page

All you need to do is get used to the new name EA FC Sports. Much less dashing it is true, but more representative of the diversity that the game brings according to EA. For its part, FIFA also draws a line under the exclusivity given to EA during all these long years, and declares that it wants to diversify its activities in gaming. In a press release, the federation explains:

For the first time, FIFA will launch new football video games developed with third-party studios and publishers, providing greater choice for football and video game fans in the run-up to the FIFA World Cup. Qatar 2022™ and FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023.”

FIFA 24, but without EA

These new titles should not all be simulation games and some are even expected this year, during the third quarter. FIFA reveals that they are already in production in various and varied studios. The first of them will be based on an interactive experience related to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. FIFA President Gianni Infantino also said:

I can assure you that the only authentic and real game that bears the FIFA name will be the best available for gamers and football fans. The name of FIFA is the only global and original title. FIFA 23, FIFA 24, FIFA 25 and FIFA 26, and so on – the constant is the FIFA name and it will forever remain THE BEST.
