(Montreal) Tail of the Storm Nicole brings heavy precipitation to much of southern Quebec and the Atlantic provinces.
Nearly 13,000 homes and businesses in Nova Scotia were already without power Saturday morning, including about 9,000 in the Halifax area. Winds reached 79 km/h at Stanfield International Airport.
By late afternoon, the number of affected customers had dropped below the 1,000 mark. There were also about 600 homes without power in New Brunswick.
Heavy precipitation warnings remain in effect for much of the Atlantic provinces and eastern Quebec. Meteorologists predict up to 80 mm of rain in some areas, including New Brunswick and southern Newfoundland.
Snow could even fall in parts of Newfoundland and eastern Quebec.
According to meteorologist Jean-Philippe Bégin, southern Quebec could see its first snowflake overnight from Sunday to Monday.
“High water levels and waves will occur in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence and these conditions will affect northeastern New Brunswick and the Gaspé Peninsula, which may cause minor flooding,” says Environment Canada on its website. .
A storm surge warning is in effect for areas along the northern Gaspé Peninsula and eastern Chaleur Bay.
