Sony announces the imminent arrival of the variable refresh rate on its PS5. What are the first games to enjoy it?
It’s something players have been waiting for since the release of the PS5. Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) will finally make its way to Sony consoles this week. The firm announces that the VRR will be available internationally in just a few days and for a large handful of games.
As a reminder, VRR is a technology that allows you to align in real time the frame rate per second of your console with that displayed by your television or monitor. This therefore allows video games to be more fluid and to avoid screen tearing as much as possible. But like any technology, to take advantage of it, you will need to have a VRR-compatible screen with an HDMI 2.1 port. If so, and you have a PS5 at home, here’s what you can enjoy.
A long enough list
VRR will be available in a few days for a good number of games on PS5, and will be deployed using a completely free and automatic patch update. Sony states that “many PS5 games will run smoother, with smoother scene rendering, sharper graphics, and reduced input latency“. Only advantages for those who have the right screen, and the corresponding games. Here is the list of all those concerned for the moment:
- Astro’s Playroom
- Call of Duty: Vanguard
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- Destiny 2
- Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
- DIRT 5
- Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
- Resident Evil Village
- Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
- Tribes of Midgard
More games to come
Of course, Sony intends to deploy VRR technology to many other games, already released but also to come. We can therefore suspect that his next big releases, in particular God of War Ragnarok, will be provided. Sony will surely communicate on this subject within the next few weeks, or even next months.
In the meantime, Sony is also promising to look into other gamer-requested features, while rumors of a possible PS5 pro continue to swirl. As for its games, the firm does not bring any new news, so we will surely know more during the next State of Play.
