(Washington) The United States is preparing to announce new military aid to Ukraine, a senior Pentagon official said on Wednesday, refusing to quantify this new effort which will be added to the 2.4 billion dollars released since the start of Joe Biden’s tenure for the Ukrainian military.
Asked during a press briefing about US media reports of new military assistance for Kyiv that could reach $750 million, the senior US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, replied: “to be continued”.
“I will just note that we have said many times that we will do everything we can, as quickly as possible, and that the president is keeping his options open for additional security assistance,” he added. .
According to the American press, it could be heavy equipment that the United States has so far refused to provide Kyiv, so as not to provoke an escalation in the conflict, such as armored vehicles.
The number two of the Pentagon, Kathleen Hicks, must chair a meeting during the day with the leaders of the main American defense groups to accelerate the production of the armaments most used by the Ukrainian army.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin “wanted to spend this meeting with the CEOs on the systems that have been involved in these security assistance programs and making sure we know where the defense industry is in terms of production, but also that the industry itself knows where we are in terms of needs,” said the senior official.
“We have given the Ukrainians a huge amount, and it would be prudent, before it becomes an issue for our own level of preparedness, to have a discussion with them about ramping up their production and the need to anticipate the production” of certain equipment, he added.
The United States has provided Ukraine with the bulk of the international military aid Kyiv has received since the fall, and is now seeking to replenish its stockpiles of weapons, even anticipating orders for equipment that was not planned for several years.
According to a list released last week by the White House, the United States has so far provided or promised Ukraine 1,400 Stinger anti-aircraft systems, 5,000 Javelin anti-tank missiles, 7,000 other anti-tank weapons, several hundred Switchblade kamikaze drones, 7,000 assault rifles, 50 million bullets and various ammunition, 45,000 batches of bullet-proof vests and helmets, laser-guided rockets, Puma drones, anti-artillery and anti-drone radars, light armored vehicles, secure communication systems, anti-mine protections.
