EA unveils the first details of the next title The Sims. Will it also be available for free?

The fans of sims have been waiting for this day for a long time. This October 18, the base game The Sims 4 is available for free, so new players just have to buy its extensions, which are paid for. Electronic Arts took the opportunity to celebrate its entire franchise, and announced a ton of new features, including a first look at The Sims 5 which is currently and officially in the works.

But before finding out, players on The Sims 4 will still be able to enjoy new content, the next burst of which will not be long in coming. The studio warns that a “wide variety of tattoos to beautify your Sims and a Plumbob ceiling fan” are already available for free in-game and that many other surprises are to come. He declares : “Players can expect more packs, kits, free updates, and The Sims Express deliveries. […] two future expansion packs will be released next year, and infants will arrive in early 2023.”

The Sims 5 is coming… for free?

Fans of the franchise haven’t seen a new installment released since 2014. Almost 10 years later, The Sims 5 will indeed make a sensational debut on PC and consoles. At least that’s what Electronic Arts tells us, which confirms the production of the game under the code name “Project Rene” to signify the rebirth of the license. The Maxis studio wishes more than anything to remain faithful to the origins of simswhile bringing the franchise into the next generation.

This will involve encouraging creativity and creating even stronger bonds between players. To do this, The Sims 5 will support cross-play between all platforms, among others. In its press release, EA explains:

The game will reinvent The Sims with even more ways to play, tools to encourage creativity, and opportunities to tell unique stories. With Project René, players will have the choice of playing solo or collaborating with other players, and will be able to play on different compatible devices.

We will not know more for the moment, but one thing is certain, the next game is likely to be a new hit. However, the studio hasn’t said a word about the franchise’s business model going forward. The move to free-to-play Sims 4 could be the beginning of a new era, as it could just as well be an isolated step.
