Will Sony launch the PlayStation Phone? The brand promises a gaming announcement

Sony finds ambitions in mobile video games. The Japanese brand will make an announcement on September 12, but don’t wait for a gaming smartphone.

Mobile games are on the rise, whether on iPhone or Android. In 2021, several titles exceeded $1 billion in revenue and this growth is expected to continue. Mobile games will bring in $116 billion by 2024, sparking interest from builders. Android gaming smartphones continue to become more popular, as do gaming accessories.

It is in this context that Sony is preparing to make an announcement related to the world of video games. The Japanese firm publishes a short 15-second video to discuss the arrival of a new Xperia product. “Were you born to play? » Sony wonders as the teaser features an eSports player holding a smartphone. The announcement will take place on September 12 at 1:00 p.m. Japan time, or 6:00 a.m. in France.

An accessory rather than a gaming smartphone

It’s hard not to make the connection with the Xperia Play, a “PlayStation Certified” smartphone that had its small effect in 2011. Since then, many have been waiting for a new “PlayStation Phone” to ride the trend. Besides the arrival of titles like Call of Duty Mobile, Fortnite, Apex Legends and services like Stadia or GeForce Now, we know that PlayStation is betting on mobile games. Still, it’s unlikely to see a gaming smartphone under the Xperia banner.

Sony simply mentions a “new play equipment” in his video and seems to be leaning towards an accessory. On Twitter, Internet users remind that the Japanese giant had raised the idea of launching a cooling system for smartphones in May. At that time, it was used on the Xperia 1 IV to evacuate heat and thus allow you to play longer in better conditions. The thickness of the accessory would also improve the grip.

We’ll find out more at Sony’s September 12 event. As a reminder, the manufacturer recently formalized a compact Xperia 5 IV to support its Xperia 1 IV.
